Lawsuit filed against Burchfield & Lundy

One week ago in a Pennsylvania District Court, a lawsuit was filed against Jimmy Burchfield and Hank Lundy by Ivan Cohen. In the past, there has been some turmoil around who is the rightful manager of Lundy, with both Cohen and Burchfield making claims. Well, as earlier promised by Cohen, he would bring a lawsuit against the parties that stood in the way of what he believes is a valid contract through 2014.I’m not sure as to the details of who has what contracts, and what is valid until when… or anything else.

I just hope that this doesn’t end up keeping Lundy on the shelf for an extended period of time. Coming off a nice win in a heated fight against Dannie Williams, Lundy has some real momentum behind him right now, and he’s a legit top 10 fighter in the lightweight division. A title shot could be right around the corner… assuming he can stay busy and continue pursuing his professional career.

We’ll see how this gets resolved and keep you posted with any further news or updates.

New World Series of Boxing franchise in Argentina for next season

Argentina WSB Franchise launched for 2012-2013 season

Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President and WSB Board Chairman, and Mr Osvaldo Bisbal, President of the Argentinean Boxing Federation, signed a WSB Franchise Agreement for Argentina that gave birth to a new World Series of Boxing Franchise and established the principles of the country’s involvement in the upcoming AIBA Professional Boxing (APB) program.

In the press conference held at the Argentinean Boxing Federation Headquarters, Dr Wu faced dozens of media all excited about the arrival of these revolutionary projects in South America. They were all eager to get details about these two AIBA programs and were excited at the possibility of seeing boxers able to compete as professionals and still retain their Olympic eligibility. All media representatives also wanted to know more about the format of the boxing competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“This is a historic moment for the WSB that arrives for the very first time in South America”, stated Dr Wu. “We are delighted to explore this new market and are very grateful to the Argentinean Boxing Federation for its support to our programs. We are convinced that both the WSB and APB have a bright future in this country”.

Dr Wu also took the opportunity to meet with the National Olympic Committee President, Mr Gerardo Werthein, who had expressed a keen interest in supporting both the WSB and the development of the sport of boxing in Argentina. “Only the very best boxers should go to the Olympic Games and the WSB and APB will prepare the world’s top boxers for that”. An opinion shared by Mr Claudio Alberto Morresi, Sports Secretary of Argentina, who also met with AIBA representatives to thank them for bringing these revolutionary projects to the country.

The Argentinean WSB Franchise will enter the competition for the upcoming 2012-2013 season while APB will begin in the Fall of 2013.

Manny Pacquiao: The anti-gay moral compass we’ve all been waiting for?

Manny Pacquiao has been in the news quite frequently over the past week, but not for his June 9th fight against Timothy Bradley, which would surely be the preference of his promoter.

Instead, he’s been causing a stir for his recent public stance against gay marriage, after U.S. President Barack Obama gave his public backing to the cause. Pacquiao’s anti-gay marriage stance popped up just days after tabloids and blogs across the globe came out with reports that his wife, Jinkee, filed for divorce prior to his third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez this past November.

According to an interview with Examiner.com, and a subsequent story on Politico.com, Pacquiao refers to gay marriage as an “abomination”. Pacquiao is quoted as saying:

“God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other. It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of Old.”

He also apparently makes allusions to Leviticus 20:13 which, amongst other notable verbiage, calls homosexual relationships “detestable” and notes that such individuals “must be put to death.”

OK then, Manny. Thanks for chiming in.

Close your eyes and imagine that Floyd Mayweather said the same thing. Can’t you already hear talking heads the world over lambasting him, as they did for his infamous remarks about Jeremy Lin, and when he made derogatory racial remarks directed towards Pacquiao himself? So, where’s the public and fan outrage about Pacquiao’s stance?

Showtime announcer and boxing Hall of Famer Al Bernstein shared such a sentiment on Twitter, saying:

“So why has there been so little blowback on Manny Pacquiao’[s] homophobic and fairly outrageous comments? Floyd’s anti-Asian Comments rightfully resulted in him getting roasted by media. How is this different?”

I know, I know…  but Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino congressman! He’ll likely be president of the country one day should he continue pursuing his political aspirations. So he has a right to take a political stance, right?

That’s true enough, but this isn’t about how Pacquiao and Mayweather get treated by media and by the public, or even whether Pacquiao, as both a public figure and a politician, should make such a statement to begin with.

So what’s it really about, you ask? A hypocritical track record which makes this particular political and moral stance fall somewhere on the spectrum from phony to misguided to bizarre.

Pacquiao’s wife filed for divorce last year – the couple has since reconciled their differences – leading the boxer / congressman / moral compass to a religious revival of sorts.

A chief reason for the divorce filing, according to a quote from trainer Freddie Roach in a Complex.com story, was a busy lifestyle filled with “girls and everything that goes with it”.

So it’s not as if the guy has been carefully living a life based upon the sanctity of his marriage, a life which also included such pastimes as owning a cockfighting farm and endorsing Hennessy in television commercials.

Now he’s quoting the Bible and partaking in frequent Bible study sessions, preaching to the Filipino masses on his television show, warning us about the perils of gay marriage, and bringing his spiritual advisor (pictured with Pacquiao, above/left) to training camp.

I believe that every human being on the planet deserves equal rights, and I make a concerted effort to avoid falling into stereotypical or prejudicial thought patterns,  beliefs and ideals. I also don’t believe on forcing my thoughts on others, because ultimately, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs even when I don’t agree with them. And certainly, you don’t come to this website for my moral or political views.

Suffice it to say though that I don’t turn to adulterous, alcohol-endorsing, gambling politicians who own cockfighting farms for their moral stances. Maybe you shouldn’t either.

Mike Mollo looking to win in spectacular fashion against Franklin Lawrence

This Friday night two Heavyweights will slug it out in Dover, Delaware will slug it out as Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence (17-2-2, 12 KO’s) takes on Mike Mollo (20-3-1, 12 KO’s) for the vacant NABA title.

Mollo has been training hard for this bout as the Chicago native knows the importance of the bout.

“Not only am I going to win but I will win in spectacular fashion. I have been putting in the hard work and have been in training camp for ten weeks”, said Mollo from his training camp in Chicago.

Mollo does not put much stock in the five fight knockout streak that Lawrence is on that has catapulted to the number-twelve ranking by the WBC.

“He beat an out shape Jason Gavern and Jason Estrada.  He has gotten off easy in those fights and if he wants to live off that then he is fooling himself”

Mollo is most remembered for gallant effort against Andrew Golota as part of the Roy JonesFelix Trinidad HBO PPV undercard on January 19, 2008 and knows what the win will do for his career.

“This fight will get me back in the spotlight and I am not looking to squeak by with a decision”

Mollo, who hasn’t fought since August 6, 2010 has been training hard to make sure he is primed and ready for Lawrence.

“I spar like it is a real fight and this long layoff doesn’t mean anything because I am always in the gym.  I was training for a fight last summer with Seth Mitchell on HBO and the fight got called off due to Robert Guerrero getting hurt and I would like to fight him if it’s the right situation.  I am a fighter”

“This fight with Lawrence begins my road to redemption.  I am in great shape and I am ready to fight”

The action begins on www.gfl.tv at 7:30 pm with Mike Mittman calling the action with analysts Legendary Heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and Marc Abrams. The bout can be seen over the world on www.gfl.tv (.99) by clicking: http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Boxing/Friday_Night_Fights/1487

In the main event of the even East L.A.’s Aron Martinez faced Colorado’s tough Joshua “Superman”. The competitive fight went to the seventh round when Martinez landed a right uppercut, left hook combination that sent Marks to the canvas.

In the co-main event junior flyweights Sindy Amador (8-0) of Riverside was judged the winner over San Diego’s Amaris Quintana (6-1-2) in a six round back and forth battle that went the distance. All three judges favored the inside flurries 59-55 twice and 58-56 for Amador.

Opening for the featured fights was Colombia’s Jhonatan “Momo” Romero (21-0, 12 KOs) who battled the rugged Adolfo Landeros (20-24-2, 10 KOs). The fight went the entire eight rounds and showcased Romero’s speed and reflexes as he pummeled Landeros throughout. In round three Romero nearly forced a stoppage, but Landeros was able to evade the killing blow. One judge scored it 80-72 and two others 80-71 for Romero.

San Fernando’s Rigoberto “Asesino” Flores (4-1, 2 KOs) upset undefeated Pedro Arcos (12-1-1, 9 KOs) with a withering attack that overwhelmed the junior welterweight fighter from Tijuana. After a good first round Arcos couldn’t sustain his energy level and that was right up Flores’s alley. He fought non-stop and landed uppercuts and left hooks that turned around the fight in his favor. All three judges scored it for Flores, 58-56, 60-54 and 59-55.

Their first fight ended in a draw, this fight was won emphatically by Sergio Nuñez (6-0-1, 4 KOs). Santa Ana’s Ramon Flores (3-15-2) and Sylmar’s Nuñez fought 18 months ago at Chumash Casino. This time Nuñez sent Flores through the ropes with a crushing right cross, and when he beat the count, another flurry of blows ended the fight by technical knockout at 2:40 of the first round. Nuñez remains undefeated.

Riverside’s Juan Reyes (5-1-1) battered Pablo Cupul (2-5-2) for three rounds non-stop until referee Lou Moret stopped the fight. Cupul protested the stoppage but was taking a lot of blows though he was never close to going down. The one-sided bantamweight fight was stopped at 2:46 of round three.

San Pedro’s Isaac Zarate (3-0) pounded through Gus Rojas’ (0-2) defense for all four rounds of a bantamweight fight. The southpaw was the quicker fighter and all three judges scored it 40-36 in his favor.

Enjoy the fistic action next month on Friday, June 22 when Thompson Boxing Promotions returns to Doubletree Hotel in Ontario!
